From the programme point of view, the atrium is to be used as the green outer space for the coffee breaks of the employees. But the problem lay in the extreme conditions, for the atrium is 80 m long, 4 m broad and 12 m high. This means, the main problem is, how to ensure the sufficient amount of natural light, necessary for plants to grow.
The atrium was meant as a green corridor with wooden pavement and urban equipment. The corridor is planned tectonically with broken flats, where two continuous surfaces – the plants and the wood - form a three-dimensional space. The broken green walls of the corridor create depth plasticity and the dramaturgy of the area; on the broadened parts are places for the employees to socialise. The green walls that rise to different heights at different angles also conceal the monotonous sheet metal facade of the store building in front of the offices.
The climbing plants (ivy – Hedera helix) grow on colour web-netting, strained on the basic construction, that create the topography of the atrium in the form of the timbers of vessel.
